 THE RSS MODEL |
RSS WEB TECHNOLOGY
The Internet is central to the RSS Model. It allows our clients to have 24-hour-a-day access to a secure website with the following features:
Enlarge | A dynamic monthly calendar where scheduled events and appointments are listed, along with details of time, location, etc.
|
Enlarge | A personal message board for secure communication with authorized staff, friends, family, and others who support the recovery process.
|
Enlarge | A Daily Activity Log where our clients submit written entries that reflect their daily, weekly and monthly experiences in their recovery.

MONITORING
Statistics show that professionals, such as doctors, who commit to long-term monitoring programs with structure and consequences for noncompliance were not only able to return to work, but also had significantly lower incidences of relapse. According to the Medical Board of California, as reported in March 2002,
statistics from the State of California's Physicians' Diversion Program show that
from the inception of the program in 1980 to March 2000, 663 physicians out
of 981 who started the program, successfully completed the program. After
factoring out physicians who did not complete the program for reasons
unrelated to their disorders, this results in a 74% success rate. For more
information regarding this study, please click here.
The three ways in which monitoring is included in the RSS Program are:
- E-Monitor. This innovative web-based application was developed by RSS to immediately and automatically notify authorized individuals, family members, treatment providers, and other health care providers when a client has not completed a daily writing assignment.
- Biological Fluid Testing (which may include hair testing). Each program participant agrees to random testing procedures.
- Weekly Review Sessions. 30 minute in person or by phone session meetings with the Program Monitor
provide each client with support, structure, and accountability during their
recovery process.
Note: These monitoring methods are not designed to be punitive, but rather to detect and assist individuals who have lapsed into addictive behavior. Consequences for non-compliance are determined on a case-by-case basis and may include referral to testing, residential assessment and evaluation, or admission to a residential treatment program.
TWELVE-STEP MEETINGS
Twelve-step programs, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, have had a long and successful history, if one accepts the words of its thousands of members. Recent scientific research adds great credibility to these positive reports. In all studies measuring the effectiveness of twelve-step programs used in conjunction with other therapies or alone, the programs were seen to have a positive effect on maintaining behavior change, especially when total abstinence was a goal. RSS embraces the philosophy and methodology of the twelve-step process and makes participation and attendance in such a group a requirement of the program. In order for our clients to better understand, in a safe and non-confrontational setting, how their addiction has affected others, the RSS Program requires attendance at Alanon meetings. Alanon is the organization that helps to support family, friends and employers of those suffering from an addiction. This requirement is designed to help our clients develop a healthy respect for their disease, while breaking down the walls of denial that so many carry into recovery.

VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT
A commitment to volunteer with a service organization dedicated to helping individuals with an addiction, or an area of interest, is a requirement of the RSS Program. Addiction always robs the larger community of its citizens by diverting their attention from the society in which they live to their self-serving obsession. Performing a volunteer commitment is one way in which people can work to restore what their addiction has taken away from society while developing positive feelings associated with being of service.

EDUCATION
Information is power and the RSS Program contains a strong educational component. Participants utilize the RSS Living in Balance curriculum that introduce various topics relating to addiction and recovery, such as physical wellness, anger management, problem-solving, and nutrition. Completing weekly assignments increases understanding and awareness of all aspects of the recovery process. Click here for a list of topics covered in the RSS Living in Balance curriculum.
WORKPLACE SUPPORT
Addiction is a serious problem within the workplace. Over 75 percent of all people who abuse alcohol, prescription medicine or illicit drugs are employed, and the effect on business is manifested in absenteeism, on-the-job accidents, errors, medical and legal costs, and decreased productivity. For employees who have gone through treatment and for those who may be involved in other recovery programs, RSS offers a daily, monitored support system that assures employers that commitments to recovery are being kept. For a minimal fee, employers can offer recovering workers the benefits of multidimensional and individualized program, which offers them timely reports in the event of noncompliance. Research shows that the cost of rehabilitating an employee can often be less than the costs associated with finding a suitable replacement. FAMILY SUPPORT
At RSS we know that addiction manifests itself in a systemic way, affecting everyone in varying degrees, from the alcoholic/addict's family to the workplace and other social environments. From the beginning, we try to create a collective recovery experience for all concerned. Since the family as a whole is affected, we encourage all members of the family to recover together whenever possible. It's also important to note that when families are included in the recovery process, they are often a powerful force in keeping the addict accountable. Family involvement is seen as supportive rather than invasive. In the unfortunate case of a relapse, a family that is part of the overall recovery process is in a much better position to respond appropriately. RSS assists each family member in gaining the resources to help stabilize and support them while supporting the addicted individual.
